Extent of the 1995 and 1998/99 mass mortalities of Sardinops sagax around southern Australia from starting points along the central South Australian coast. Latitudes and longitudes are degrees south and east respectively. Figure 2. Purse seine management zones on the south (Zones 1–5) and lower west coasts (West Coast Purse Seine) of Western Australia. Zone 2 is a small inshore zone that covers King George Sound, the original location for purse seining at Albany. This zone was enacted in recognition of the need to ensure that the Albany purse seine fleet did not overexploit the inshore aggregations Figure 3. The extent of DEPM surveys carried out in purse seine management zone in south–western Australia from 2000–2006.. Figure 6a. Changes in diet and trophic position of a top predator 10 years after a mass mortality of a key prey

After the disappearance of primary prey, seabirds exhibit gradually decreased breeding performance, and eventually the population size drops. Results are presented of an investigation into the diet of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) at Phillip Island, Australia, during a period when their key prey, pilchard (Sardinops sagax), declined dramatically. Data from stomach flushing (1982–2006) were ...

National aquatic animal health plans: the Australian experience.

Following a major pilchard (Sardinops sagax) mortality event in 1995, Australia recognised the need for a national approach to aquatic animal health, particularly with respectto disease response. Cooperation between industry and government led to the development of AQUAPLAN, Australia's National Strategic Plan for Aquatic Animal Health. Under AQUAPLAN, institutional arrangements for the nationa...

Evidence that the Migration of the Northern Subpopulation of Pacific Sardine (Sardinops sagax) off the West Coast of the United States Is Age-Based

Analysis of fish movements has been an important area of study for fisheries ecology and population dynamics for decades. Pacific sardine, Sardinops sagax, along the west coast of the United States exhibit a well-defined large-scale seasonal migration. Larger and older fish are found in the northern reaches of their range during summer and contract to southerly offshore areas for spawning durin...

The Benguela upwelling ecosystem lies adjacent to the south-western coast of Africa, from southern Angola

south-western coast of Africa, from southern Angola (15°S) to Cape Agulhas (35°S; Fig. 1). Ecologically, it is split into separate northern and southern subsystems by a zone of intense perennial upwelling near Lüderitz (26–27.5°S; Shannon 1985). As is characteristic of upwelling ecosystems, the Benguela is highly productive and supports abundant populations of plankton-feeding clupeoids, includ...
